Brief Summary :

In Portugal, the Head and Neck Cancer Study Group (GECCP), the Friends of Patients with Oral Cancer Association (ASADOCORAL), with the support of Merck KGaA, launched a campaign between 23th to 27th July. This campaign aimed to  raise awareness of head and neck cancer, focusing on the importance of recognize the signs and symptoms and the most recent risk factor: HPV.

During the whole week, local media (lay and medical) gave visibility to this cause and GECCP’s Facebook profile has been updated several times, with photos, interviews and pertinent information to the patients and carers (i.g. we’ve shared the book - LARINGECTOMIZED GUIDE written by Dr. Itzhak Brook.

Still during this week, the ORL service from Hospital das Forças Armadas - Porto has developed an early diagnosis session (almost 100 screenings were done) where GECCP provided the communication materials (posters, flyers and press releases). In addition, the IPO-Porto created a direct line to HCPs who deal with head and neck cancer everyday in order to educate and train other HCPs (Family Phisicians, Nurses, Dentists)  with no experience in this area. About 150 Family Phisicians participated on this iniative.

69 communication opportunities were created in the media wich correspond to € 719 430, 81 AVE (Advertising Value Equivalency).  We’ve reached the three main national broadcasting stations: RTP1, SIC and TVI with 27 news.

On July 27, Dr. Ana Castro was on a morning news program: Sic Notícias – Edição da Manhã, and that afternoon, she gave an interview to the Primeiro Jornal – SIC and Telejornal – RTP1. The interview conducted for Jornal de Notícias created a great buzz on the day, with a strong national reach.
